Sending emails is a vital part of most web projects. They can alert you of an enquiry via a contact form, send password reminders and so on.

Personally I would recommend using an external api like Mandrill as external mail services can be more convenient and most offer some form of reporting. If you are using shared hosting mail issues do pop up from time to time – more often than you would think. If you are setting up a dedicated server / vps, not having to worry about managing the mail server does make ones life a tiny bit easier. Services like Mandrill and CritSend also provide a range of statistics to help analysis mail sent.
